SUCCESS CASES

The use of Artificial Intelligence in the improvement of public transport: the Avanza Group and the CEF of the European Commission.

The Challenge Addressed

The Analysis of AI techniques in data management for public transport digitalization (ANAISS) project was approved within the framework of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) 2023 call, the only project approved in Spain on artificial intelligence applied to data and the only one at European level on data applied to road passenger transport.

Designed and led by AVANZA SPAIN, AVANZA Movilidad Integral (leading companies in the public passenger transport sector) and Novadays, ANAISS aims to generate knowledge on the use of artificial intelligence for the optimization of urban and interurban public transport networks located along the TEN-T network and to create and enable a data space that allows efficient and seamless interoperability, which will positively impact transport safety and multimodal travel.

The innovative results of the project will be tested in urban and interurban transport services in the Atlantic and Mediterranean corridors of the TEN-T network, specifically in the main urban nodes of Madrid, Barcelona, Zaragoza and Bilbao and their connections with transport infrastructures in the regions of Malaga, Alicante and the Basque Country.

Novadays' Contribution

Novadays' contribution is focused:

  • Project management and coordination
  • Data analysis and technical support in sustainable mobility
  • Development of strategies for implementation and replicability: elaboration and implementation of a communication, dissemination and exploitation plan.
  • Support in the integration and collaboration of the main agents of the transport ecosystem, public and private, both at national and international level: Municipalities, Metropolitan Transport Authorities, Regional Transport Agencies and Ministries with competences in transport; transport infrastructure operators, public transport operators, as well as technological and research centers, among others.

Impact and Results Obtained

The most important results and impacts are:

  • Incorporation of AI algorithms for:
    • Improve the user experience in public transport and,
    • To reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and thus achieve cleaner, lower-carbon transportation, and contribute to decarbonizing transportation by enabling seamless multimodal travel and promoting access to greener alternatives.
  • Development of a large data center to digitize public transport and promote multimodality in the TEN-T corridors, incorporating other transport nodes in addition to Zaragoza.
  • Development of intelligent models for demand forecasting in urban and interurban corridors.
  • Development of intelligent driving models for long-distance transportation to optimize the efficiency of long-distance transportation trips.
  • Development of the trans-European transport network through measures to promote the efficient use of network resources.
  • Optimal integration and interconnection of all modes of transport.
  • Economically efficient and high quality transportation that contributes to greater economic growth and competitiveness.
  • Efficient use of new existing infrastructure through the use of AI technologies applied to intermodal transportation.
  • Greenhouse gas emissions reduction, low carbon and clean transportation, fuel security, external cost reduction and environmental protection.
  • Optimization of transportation policies based on data.
  • Improving road transport safety.
  • Users: estimated to benefit more than 19 million inhabitants.
