Nature-based solutions

The use of nature's principles to solve problems related to territorial and urban management, as well as adaptation to climate change, resource management, water, food security, air quality and the environment.

Nature-based solutions (NBS) seek to use the principles and processes of natural ecosystems to address urban and territorial challenges. These solutions not only improve quality of life, but also provide multiple benefits, such as mitigating and adapting to climate change, managing natural resources, and strengthening environmental resilience. BNS can transform key areas of our society:

  • Adaptation to climate change:restoring forests, wetlands and urban green areas can help reduce the risk of flooding, improve carbon sequestration and regulate temperature in urban areas. These solutions allow cities to better adapt to extreme weather events, such as heat waves and intense storms.
  • Sustainable resource and water management: The implementation of nature-based technologies, such as rainwater harvesting and storage systems, watershed restoration and urban rain gardens, offers sustainable alternatives for water management. These methods not only optimize water use, but also protect aquatic ecosystems and enhance biodiversity.
  • Food security: BNS promotes regenerative agriculture, which favors the use of environmentally friendly agricultural practices. Techniques such as agroforestry, mixed cropping and urban gardens are examples of how degraded land can be reclaimed, soils improved and food security increased in urban and rural environments.
  • Promoting biodiversity: BDS help restore and protect natural habitats, such as forests, wetlands and coasts. These ecosystems provide shelter and food for a wide variety of species, contributing to the preservation of biodiversity. By incorporating natural spaces into urban environments, they also facilitate the movement of species, improving ecological connectivity.
  • Nature-based solutions are not only environmentally beneficial, but can also generate economic benefits. Restoring natural ecosystems, creating parks and green spaces, and promoting urban agriculture can attract investment, generate local employment and increase property values.

Implementing nature-based solutions is essential to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Not only do they provide direct benefits for climate change adaptation and environmental sustainability, but they also create healthier, more resilient and nature-connected environments.
