The Madrid City Council has approved the creation of the evaluation committee for its urban sandbox, a controlled testing environment for innovative projects. Made up of representatives from different areas of the consistory, the evaluation body will be in charge of studying, assessing and monitoring applications for access to the sandbox, as well as ensuring compliance with the ordinance.
Madrid's urban sandbox ordinance was approved on January 28 with the aim of providing an appropriate legal framework to test, on a limited basis, innovative functionalities, products and solutions in a safe, effective and aligned with the public interest. Thus, companies, start-ups and other agents will be able to test new technological solutions in real environments, under supervision, before their possible large-scale implementation.
In charge of monitoring, advising, coordinating and controlling, the main functions of the evaluation committee will be to study, evaluate and follow up on applications for access to the sandbox. It will also designate supervisors for each initiative and may issue reports and recommendations on the progress of the projects.
The creation of this body, composed of representatives from different areas of the Madrid City Council, will be supported by existing staff and resources to avoid additional costs and resources.
The Madrid City Council has set up a space in the electronic headquarters to receive proposals that want to be part of the urban sandbox and detect the fields of interest to launch the first public calls.
The aforementioned calls for proposals will be thematic and will be published gradually according to the needs identified. The first one is expected to open before the end of the year.
