Zaragoza and the complexity of achieving zero-emission public transport in large cities

10/02/2024

For some time now, electric mobility has been the main focus of attention in the transport sector. The decarbonization of cities and the need to meet the emission reduction targets set by Brussels have made the electrification of public transport a priority for national and local governments.

Public transport is, in itself, one of the most efficient systems in terms of the number of private vehicles it replaces collective transport. Governments have a responsibility to monitor and improve air quality in cities, and one of the tools available to them is precisely to reduce emissions from road traffic, with policies in favor of sustainable mobility and by transforming their own fleets.

Novadays has worked hand in hand with different government teams from different Spanish and European cities accompanying them in this transformation. This requires a large deployment in charging infrastructure and electrification that has little to do with the private vehicle.

An example of the success of these investment programs is the Zaragoza Zero Emissions project , in which Novadays supports the Zaragoza City Council with a technical office responsible for the successful implementation of the investment program.

Investments include the acquisition of almost 70 buses and the preparation of the entire infrastructure, including the adaptation of electrical substations and the public transport operator's depots.

The benefits already achieved are optimal for air quality and also have an impact on improving the user experience, reducing noise and being smoother driving vehicles than traditional ones.

Novadays supports all stakeholders with a comprehensive support, which allows to execute investments minimizing risks and maximizing the chances of success.

The Zaragoza Zero Emissions project aims to transform 100% of the bus fleet.

Novadays brings all its experience in mobility policies, energy policies and management of large public investment programs.
