Zaragoza City Council and the electrification of urban mobility: Zaragoza Zero Emissions

The Challenge Addressed

The electrification of transport is one of the great challenges facing local administrations, which must undertake major investment projects to achieve zero-emission public transport.

This is a challenge that must be addressed in order to decarbonize cities, improve air quality and meet European and national environmental commitments.

The project has received European funding of 50 million euros, thus accelerating its implementation. In total, Zaragoza City Council will invest more than 100 million euros in the coming years, which will make it the first Spanish city with a zero-emission public transport system.

Impact and Results Obtained

  • Transformation of 100% of the bus fleet.
  • The investments include the acquisition of 70 electric buses, the adaptation of an electric substation, the installation of 76 chargers in the depots and the acquisition of 2 tramway units, as well as the preparation of the entire infrastructure, including the adaptation of electric substations and the public transport operator's depots.
  • The operations center will be electrified, laying the groundwork for the rest of the fleet.
  • The benefits already achieved are optimal for air quality and also have an impact on improving the user experience, reducing noise and being smoother driving vehicles than traditional ones.

Zaragoza will invest more than 160 million in a comprehensive green energy plan to reach 2030 as a climate neutral city.

The Government of Zaragoza approves the technical project and the preliminary draft of the Low Emission Zone Ordinance (ZBE), which should be fully operational by 2026.
