The electrification of an entire interurban transport operation: the cases of Coslada and Getafe

The Challenge Addressed

The need to optimize consumption and minimize the cost of electrical energy is key for interurban public transport in Spain.
is key for interurban public transport in Spain.

The electrification of public transport is a major challenge for the cities of Coslada and Getafe and for the public transport operating companies. It is not only a matter of replacing the fleet, but electrification implies a change in the business model, the development of new Capabilities by the companies (not used to actively manage energy consumption), investment in infrastructure (depots and electrical substations), rethinking transport planning (optimizing electrical consumption and battery life), waste treatment (making a circular use, for example, of batteries), among others.
batteries), among others.

To this end, Grupo Avanza proposes actions related to optimal energy management, all related to a clearly defined challenge: to abandon the consumption of fossil fuels and with it the high dependence on an energy whose costs cannot be controlled and which represent approximately 30% of the total costs in the company's operations. Electrification represents an unprecedented opportunity to achieve not only zero emissions, but also more efficient management of energy use, a reduction in energy costs for the company and, in short, more efficient public transport with higher productivity.

Novadays' Contribution

Novadays focuses on the contribution of the work of its professionals helping to accelerate the transformation of the public transport system by bus towards a more sustainable and energy efficient model, which allows to approach faster to the environmental objectives set by Spain and the European Union.

Novadays actively assists through:

  • Technical management of the project.
  • Follow-up of investments in terms of costs and deadlines.
  • Communication and justifications to IDAE.
  • External quality and cost audits.
  • Risk management.
  • Documentary management.
  • Obligations and communication actions

Impact and Results Obtained

  • Energy savings of 9.42% (toe/year) compared to the previous situation.
  • Reduction of CO2 emissions by 11.99% (ton/year) with respect to the previous situation.
  • 100% of the costs of products and services will be supplied by Spanish companies.
  • Accelerate more efficient and optimal energy management of farms.
  • Implementation of efficient driving systems for electric vehicles.
  • Design an intelligent platform with a service optimization engine to minimize energy consumption.
  • Intelligent energy management center that - distributed in each operation and exploitation center - allows not only local management, but also collective management and interoperation.
  • Innovative applications applicable to any type of electric or fuel cell vehicle, in urban areas and especially in fleets, as well as for the improvement of accessibility and rural mobility, through the incorporation of an efficient driving system in the electric fleet.
  • Results scalable to all other urban and metropolitan transport operations and to other modes of transport with electric fleets.
